Starting from the premise that rightwing Western and Islamist populism emerged as a response to the social and economic (dis)order, triggered by neoliberal capitalism and imperialism as well as the increasing demands for justice of the marginalized populations, including women, this presentation suggests they both fabricate an enemy to divert attention from real problems. The Western rightwing nationalists strive to convince people that redemption rests in closing borders to (Muslim) migrants, while their Islamist counterparts try to blockade flowing influence of modern values and practices, hoping to turn back the clock in favour of status quo-ante. The intention is to draw attention to the contradictory impacts of populists’ agendas on movements for justice and rights.
